{"id":20624,"date":"2026-08-09T18:00:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T22:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aseq-ehaq.ca\/?page_id=20624"},"modified":"2026-08-09T18:09:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T22:09:25","slug":"voc-profiles-and-health-evidence","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/aseq-ehaq.ca\/en\/voc-profiles-and-health-evidence\/","title":{"rendered":"VOC Profiles and Health Evidence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the Accessible Indoor Air research project, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) identified through indoor air testing were reviewed to better understand their potential sources, uses, health effects, and the availability of health-based guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VOC profiles bring together information from scientific literature and authoritative sources, including Health Canada, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and other scientific and regulatory sources. The supporting references also include research relevant to indoor air, irritation and sensory mechanisms, including transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels for some compounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An important observation from this review is that the amount of health information available varies considerably among VOCs. Some compounds have substantial toxicological and health information and, in some cases, established indoor-air reference values. For other VOCs identified during the research, health information is limited, and compound-specific human, long-term, inhalation, or indoor-air guidance may be unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Limited health data should not be interpreted as evidence that a chemical is safe.<\/strong> Rather, it identifies an important knowledge gap and highlights the need for further research, particularly regarding chronic low-level exposures, chemical mixtures, secondary reaction products, and populations who may experience adverse effects or disability-related barriers in indoor environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For people living with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), conventional indoor-air guideline values and toxicological assessments may not, on their own, determine whether an indoor environment is accessible.
