Municipal action is now required to align with the <strong>Accessible Canada Act (2019)<\/strong> and Canada\u2019s obligations under the <strong>United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD)<\/strong>, including through the implementation of fragrance-free and low-emission environments as essential accessibility measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"your-story\"><strong>Shine a Light on <\/strong><em><strong>Your<\/strong><\/em><strong> <\/strong><strong>Story<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This May, we also want to shine a light on <em><strong>you<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 your ideas, your experiences, and the meaningful ways you choose to mark the MCS Awareness Month and the MCS Awareness Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We warmly invite you to <strong>participate by sharing<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your<strong> personal story or lived experience <\/strong>with <strong>MCS<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How you<strong> plan to acknowledge or educate and raise awareness <\/strong>during May and for May 12 which is <strong>MCS Awareness<\/strong> Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photos, stories, poetry, music, reflections, creative ideas, initiatives, or plans <strong>you\u2019d like to highlight and share <\/strong>for the webpage, and newsletter.You can<strong> share your name, or remain anonymous. This is <em>your<\/em> month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help make MCS more visible across Canada, we\u2019re launching our <strong>Yellow &amp; Green Initiative<\/strong> \u2014 and we invite you, your family, and your friends to take part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few simple ways you can participate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Put up yellow and green lights outside your home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear yellow and green on May 12<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask friends or family to hang a string of yellow and green lights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decorate a window, porch, workspace, or community space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organize a small awareness moment in your circle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then \u2014 take a photo and send it to us!<br><br>By sharing your photo, you are giving us permission to feature it on our website, in our newsletters, and on social media as part of our awareness efforts. We may highlight selected photos to help amplify visibility and showcase the strength of our community across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s make the month of May and May 12 a visible <strong>Yellow &amp; Green Event<\/strong> across the country \ud83d\udc9b\ud83d\udc9a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you for being part of this community \u2014 we can\u2019t wait to see what you\u2019ll share !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mcs\">What Is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a <strong>recognized disability in Canada<\/strong> that can substantially limit major life activities, including breathing, mobility, access to housing, employment, healthcare, education, and public services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People living with MCS experience adverse health effects when exposed to <strong>volatile organic compounds (VOCs)<\/strong> found in perfumes, fragranced products, cleaning agents, pesticides, building materials, and other chemical emissions commonly present in indoor and outdoor environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Accommodation for this disability is well established and includes the implementation of fragrance-free policies; the use of lowest-VOC-emission, least-toxic products for all uses and purposes; and preventive, non-chemical approaches to building and land management that reduce the need for chemical interventions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These measures support accessibility, dignity, and equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why\">Why May and May 12 Matter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Statistics Canada<\/strong> has collected population-level data on MCS since 2000. Over a 20-year period, prevalence more than doubled to <strong>over 1.13 million Canadians (1 in 34)<\/strong> diagnosed with MCS, confirming its public-health significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognition of MCS Awareness Month and Day is <strong>not symbolic<\/strong>. It helps ensure that public spaces, services, and programs are accessible and inclusive for people whose health and participation depend on reduced chemical exposures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"accessibility\">Accessibility, Inclusion, and Fragrance-Free Environments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Scent-free and low-emission environments are widely recognized as <strong>essential accommodation measures<\/strong> for people living with MCS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Canadian Human Rights Commission<\/strong> recognizes MCS as a disability and affirms <strong>scent-free and low-toxicity environments as required accommodations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>American Medical Association<\/strong> recognizes fragrance sensitivity including MCS as a condition that may limit major life activities and supports fragrance-free policies, ingredient transparency, and clinical awareness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under the<strong> United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities<\/strong>, Canada has been directed to eliminate discrimination against persons with MCS and ensure equality and inclusion across all levels of government.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Statistics Canada <\/strong>has collected national data on MCS since 2000, with current analyses indicating that <strong>over 1.13 million Canadians (1 in 34)<\/strong> have been diagnosed with MCS, confirming its prevalence and public-health significance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Accessible Canada Act (2019) establishes a proactive duty to identify, remove, and prevent barriers to accessibility for all persons with disabilities<\/strong>.
